Description

On Good Friday, the Church pauses in solemn silence. There is no Mass. No consecration takes place. As Fr. Chris Alar, MIC, explains, this is not an omission but a profound theological truth. On the other 364 days of the year, the Mass is a re-presentation of the sacrifice at Calvary. It makes the one sacrifice of Christ present to us in an unbloody manner. But on Good Friday, we do not need a re-presentation. We stand at the foot of the Cross where the reality occurred. Father Chris reminds us that the hosts we receive today at Holy Communion were consecrated last night during the Mass of the Lord's Supper. They are the same Body and Blood offered on the altar of the Upper Room. By receiving Communion today without a new consecration, we are participating directly in the historical event of Christ’s death. We are witnessing the sacrifice of Christ. The liturgy of the Lord’s Passion allows us to venerate the instrument of our salvation, the Cross, and to unite our own sufferings with His. This day is called "Good" not because the suffering was pleasant, but because it brought about our redemption. It was the day the Creator allowed Himself to be nailed to a tree by His own creatures, yet in that act of supreme love, He conquered sin and death. The absence of the Mass highlights the uniqueness of this day. It forces us to confront the raw reality of the Passion.
