Our Gulf War Centurion 165 AVRE has a serious problem…
This particular tank was used during the Gulf War to help clear the infamous “Highway Of Death”, but after years of service the old Rolls Royce V12 engine is now fighting for survival.
Although it still runs, something inside the engine has catastrophically failed. One of the valve seats has dropped out causing huge amounts of smoke, major loss of power and oil being thrown everywhere — creating a very real fire risk every time the engine is started.
In this video we begin the enormous task of removing the entire engine from the tank. What sounds simple quickly turns into a massive operation involving hours of stripping components, disconnecting systems and preparing the vehicle for one of the biggest lifts we’ve attempted in the workshop.
Using our Chieftain Armoured Recovery Vehicle, we finally crane the damaged engine out and start investigating just how bad the destruction really is…
Can this historic Gulf War machine be saved with a replacement New Old Stock engine?
