Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Episode 1 Review
Season two of Daredevil: Born Again is finally here! Let’s dive into the first episode. The season definitely hit the ground running. Daredevil stopped a ship full of weapons that Fisk brought into Red Hook, and that’s where we got our first look at the black suit. It looks absolutely stunning.
Technically, the second season doesn't pick up exactly where the first one left off. There’s actually a time jump, even though the show doesn't explicitly state it. The producers mentioned it’s been about six months. During this gap, Matt and Karen have been working hard to expose Fisk’s true colors to the public.
I’ve never been a fan of the Matt and Karen relationship, but I actually enjoyed their scenes in this premiere. My only gripe was that some of the dialogue, especially at the start of the episode, felt a bit clunky.
As for the Fisk side of things, I’m still not completely sold on the "Mayor Kingpin" portrayal. It feels like he’s being held back, and Kingpin is best when he's unleashed—like when he crushed Gallo’s head in the season finale. I’m really hoping we see more of that "classic" ruthless Kingpin this season.
One issue I had with the first season was the influx of new characters who didn't quite land because they weren't developed enough. Cherry and Kirsten clearly cared for Matt, and he for them, but with so little screen time, I just couldn't bring myself to care about them. Heather was also a bit dull, her sightings of Muse have me intrigued; they might actually make her character more interesting. We also got a brief glimpse of Swordsman, and it looks like he’ll be a recurring figure this season.
The characters surrounding Fisk haven't been written very strongly either. Take Buck, his right-hand man; he just sort of appeared out of thin air. It felt jarring that Fisk would trust him so implicitly without us knowing anything about his background. Yet, he remains Fisk’s most trusted ally this season.
I’m also really liked Matthew Lillard’s character, Mr. Charles. He’s definitely more intriguing than the other supporting characters, and I’m curious to see what kind of moves he’ll make against Fisk. Valentina Allegra de Fontaine was mentioned, it turns out she’s the one who sent Mr. Charles. I just wish we knew exactly where this show sits on the timeline. Is it set before or after Thunderbolts?
I wouldn't say the episode was "action-packed" per se. It felt more like a "where are they now" check-in, focusing mostly on tracking down the captains of the ship from the opening scene.
That said, the ending was a massive cliffhanger. While the Task-Force is interrogating Cherry, Daredevil steps in to save him. Cherry ends up having a heart attack due to the intensity of the interrogation. I actually liked how ruthless the Task-Force was portrayed. But then, more people arrive, and Daredevil’s identity is exposed—they find out he’s Matt Murdock. This caught me off guard because when I saw this scene in the trailers, I was certain it was a scene from the season finale.
Then, in a total curveball, Bullseye saves Matt. Bullseye was unfortunately sidelined in the first season, but it looks like he’s going to have a much bigger role now. They’ve already started hinting at a potential team-up between him and Daredevil. However, I’m not sure how Foggy’s death will complicate that dynamic.
Overall, I think it’s a strong start to the season—honestly, better than the first season's premiere. Next week, we’re getting episodes two and three together. I'll see you in the next video!
