Ilkay Gundogan Arrives in Istanbul as Galatasaray Begin Transfer Talks

The Turkish-born German footballer Ilkay Gundogan, whose registration belongs to the English Premier League club Manchester City and with whom Galatasaray has begun transfer negotiations, has arrived in Istanbul. The 34-year-old midfielder, who came on a private jet to Atatürk Airport’s General Aviation Terminal, was welcomed by officials of the yellow-red club. Speaking to members of the press at the airport, Gündoğan expressed his delight: "It’s a proud day for me. We are very excited. I’m happy to be here. I want to adapt to the team as quickly as possible and play enjoyable football." Gündoğan noted that he had received transfer offers from other clubs but said: "There was no offer I was seriously considering. I started talks with Galatasaray at the beginning of June. I had to wait a little. Thankfully, on the very last day, the transfer was completed. We will now be part of the Galatasaray family." He also mentioned his friend from the German national team, Leroy Sané: "I last spoke with him about two weeks ago. I haven’t talked to him recently. We know each other well and we’re good friends. We’ll play good football together." On his discussions with Galatasaray’s head coach Okan Buruk regarding the transfer, Gündoğan said: "We had spoken two days ago. After that, everything developed very quickly. I want to meet him face to face." Feeling very proud, Gündoğan added: "We are very happy. We’ve returned home. Being part of the Galatasaray community is very meaningful. I’ve waited for this day for a long time. It was worth the wait. Finally, we’ve reunited. It took a while, but we’re happy. I can’t wait to wear the jersey and step out onto the stadium pitch." After his remarks, Gündoğan led the fans in a traditional “three cheers” chant before leaving the airport in a private vehicle arranged for him.
