New LPG Rule: Centre Cuts Subsidised Ujjwala LPG Refills From 9 To 4 Annually | India Today News

The central government has reduced the number of subsidised LPG refills under the Ujjwala scheme from nine to four cylinders annually. Launched in 2016 to provide clean cooking fuel to poor households, the scheme initially offered twelve subsidised cylinders a year. Beneficiaries will continue to receive a 300-rupee cashback for the first four cylinders. The revision follows an 89-rupee increase in cooking gas prices. According to the Ministry of Petroleum, the actual cost of supplying a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder is nearly 1,600 rupees, with oil marketing companies facing an under-recovery of 700 rupees per cylinder. The government absorbs a subsidy of nearly 1,000 rupees per Ujjwala refill. Officials attribute the policy change to escalating conflicts in West Asia, which have driven up global crude oil and LPG prices.
