Pīwakawaka is not just a song - it's a moment AVYA had to write down. AVYA (Avia Ririana) is a New Zealand Christian artist currently living off-grid in the Puhoi hills, writing music shaped by stillness, faith, and the land. This live in-studio performance of her new track Pīwakawaka was recorded during NZ Music Month 2026 on the Life FM Morning Wake Up with Bjorn and Sela. In Māori mythology, the pīwakawaka (the fantail) is believed to carry messages from the spiritual realm. For whānau, a fantail appearing inside the home can signal that someone is about to pass, or that a loved one who has already gone is near. AVYA has experienced this personally. As a Christian artist, she holds that lightly, but she says some things are just proven true in your own life. This song is her honest response to that.
