Description

Plug-in solar is coming to UK shops, and the electrical industry is not exactly calm about it. After Ed Miliband announced that plug-in solar could be available in the UK by the summer, trade bodies and industry voices quickly raised concerns about safety, UK wiring systems, backfeeding, overloaded circuits, anti-islanding protection and what happens when the general public start plugging generation into their homes. But is plug-in solar genuinely dangerous? In this video, we revisit our original plug-in solar setup, which has now generated 155 kWh from two panels in three months, saving around £47 so far and tracking towards roughly £190 per year. We also upgrade the system with the Indevolt Powerflex 2000, an integrated plug-in solar and battery storage unit designed for the German market, with four independent MPPT inputs, expandable battery storage, smart energy management and a fixed-circuit option that can unlock higher output. We test what happens when the mains supply is lost, explain anti-islanding protection, look at the real risks around UK socket circuits, RCDs, outdoor use, panel mounting and DIY installations, and ask whether the industry is focusing on the right problem. Because the biggest risk may not be plug-in solar itself. It may be what people plug it into.
