Bundle up and come along as I brave subzero wind chills to explore Fort Riley near Manhattan, Kansas—from checking in at the visitor center to diving deep into history at the U.S. Cavalry Museum, housed in an 1855 stone hospital and packed with artifacts spanning the mounted era through modern mechanized warfare. Along the way, we uncover Fort Riley’s origins guarding the Oregon and Santa Fe Trails, its Civil War and Indian Wars roles, its evolution into a major training hub and home of the 1st Infantry Division, and its impact through World War II, Vietnam, the Gulf War, and deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. We also pass Patton Hall (named for George S. Patton), memorials, old trolley remnants, the Ogden Monument, and the site of Pawnee, Kansas—Kansas’ five-day territorial capital—before ending with a frozen hike up to Atomic Annie for sweeping views of the post. It’s a cold day, but a fascinating look at one of Kansas’ most historically rich military installations.
