Deep beneath the red deserts of northwest Queensland lies one of the most extreme engineering environments on Earth. In this video, we go inside Australia’s deepest mine — the legendary Mount Isa mining complex and its ultra-deep Enterprise underground copper mine, reaching nearly 2 kilometres beneath the surface. From scorching underground temperatures and massive ventilation systems to refrigerated cooling plants, rock bursts, underground infrastructure, and the incredible engineering required to keep miners alive at extreme depths, this is a journey into one of the harshest workplaces in Australia.
But Mount Isa is far more than just a deep underground mine. This is one of the most important mining discoveries in Australian history. Discovered in 1923 by prospector John Campbell Miles while searching for gold, Mount Isa became one of the largest polymetallic mining operations in the world, producing enormous quantities of copper, zinc, lead, and silver over nearly a century of continuous mining. We explore how this giant Australian mine was discovered, how much ore has been extracted, how deep the underground workings extend, and why Mount Isa became one of the most famous mining operations on Earth.
We also dive into the incredible geology behind the Mount Isa orebody. These ancient Proterozoic rocks formed around 1.65 billion years ago in a vast rifted sedimentary basin, where metal-rich hydrothermal brines moved through black shales and siltstones before later tectonic deformation during the Isan Orogeny remobilised and upgraded parts of the deposit. This is one of Australia’s most fascinating geological stories, combining sediment-hosted mineralisation, hydrothermal copper systems, mountain building, basin evolution, and some of the oldest economically important ore deposits on the continent.
If you love geology, mining engineering, underground mines, Australian history, mineral exploration, ore deposits, mining documentaries, deep earth science, copper mining, zinc mining, silver mining, lead mining, hydrothermal systems, tectonics, structural geology, or giant mining machines, this video is for you. From ancient ore formation to modern industrial engineering, this is the full story of what lies beneath Mount Isa.
Australia’s deepest mine. Extreme underground heat. Ancient ore systems. Giant sulfide deposits. Underground cooling systems. Massive mine ventilation. Rock bursts. Copper ore. Lead-zinc-silver mineralisation. Proterozoic geology. Australian mining history. This is Mount Isa.

🌏 About OzGeology
The core mission of OzGeology is to make geology exciting, accessible, and inspiring for everyone. Instead of presenting rocks and earth science as dry or overly academic, OzGeology brings stories of the planet to life, revealing how every mountain, mineral, and landscape tells part of Earth’s grand adventure. The goal is to help people see the world differently, to understand the dynamic forces shaping Australia and beyond, and to spark curiosity in the next generation of geologists. Through engaging storytelling, field exploration, and clear explanations, OzGeology turns the study of our planet into a journey of discovery rather than a classroom lecture.
