Discovered in 1923 by prospector John Campbell Miles while searching for gold, Mount Isa became one of the largest polymetallic mining operations in the world, producing enormous quantities of copper, zinc, lead, and silver over nearly a century of continuous mining. We explore how this giant Australian mine was discovered, how much ore has been extracted, how deep the underground workings extend, and why Mount Isa became one of the most famous mining operations on Earth. We also dive into the incredible geology behind the Mount Isa orebody. These ancient Proterozoic rocks formed around 1.65 billion years ago in a vast rifted sedimentary basin, where metal-rich hydrothermal brines moved through black shales and siltstones before later tectonic deformation during the Isan Orogeny remobilised and upgraded parts of the deposit. This is one of Australia’s most fascinating geological stories, combining sediment-hosted mineralisation, hydrothermal copper systems, mountain building, basin evolution, and some of the oldest economically important ore deposits on the continent.
