The £12M Dinnington Sheffield No-Go Zone: Missed Deadlines & Market Chaos 🛑
Rotherham Council’s PR machine wants you to think they are generously investing £12M of their own money to fix Dinnington High Street. But a walk down Laughton Road reveals a completely different story of missed deadlines, failed planning, and massive taxpayer waste.
This funding actually came from a central government Levelling Up grant secured by local lobbying, not RMBC. Yet, despite millions being in motion, the original buildings are still standing months past the council's promised demolition deadlines.
The planning has been an absolute mess. They rushed to evict independent businesses from the first block, moving one trader into the second block—only to announce that the second block has to be flattened too! Now, the taxpayer will likely foot the bill for them to move a second time because the council botched the initial structural surveys.
Worse yet, the council has created an intimidating, unpoliced dead zone. I wanted to walk right onto the market area today to show you the layout, but it has become a no-go zone due to groups of youths shouting abuse. How are the final 8 market traders supposed to survive when local shoppers are too intimidated to even walk down the high street? Instead of using cheap, safe, reusable metal fencing and flattening the empty plots with clean compressed limestone to keep the high street open and bright, they’ve wasted cash boxing the town in with massive wooden walls.
If you visit on a Friday, you'll see their cleverest PR trick: intentionally spreading the remaining traders far apart to make the market look full. I believe this whole project is a massive white elephant. RMBC will likely knock all these buildings down, and we will never see the market actually rebuilt. This site should have been handed to a private developer who could deliver on time, on budget, and keep our community safe.
🚨 FREEDOM OF INFORMATION (FOI) REQUEST IS IN. I have officially demanded the full receipts, internal communications, and financial breakdowns from RMBC to find out exactly where our public money is leaking.
💬 Have you felt unsafe walking past the old market area? What do you think of the council's delays? Let me know in the comments below.
