Who wore this hat – and why is there a hole in it? 🧐

It belonged to Ernst Casimir, governor of the Dutch provinces Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe in the 17th century. During the Siege of Roermond in 1632, field marshal Casimir was fatally shot - right through his hat.
