Description

This is a Motormouth couple car video about the 2026 Mazda CX-5 being crashed for the IIHS front overlap test. What an experience with had with Mazda at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in Charlottesville, Virginia. We watched the 2026 Mazda CX-5 go through a 40% overlap crash test at 40 MPG/65 km/h. Mazda has quite a safety story to tell with an industry leading safety rating and award history with IIHS. Mazda has earned 99 IIHS Top Safety awards since 2008 with 73 of the those being Top Safety Pick+ awards. Mazda vehicles earned eight 2026 Top Safety Pick+ awards from IIHS, more than any brand. The brand is hoping for a 9th with the new CX-5. Results of the crash should be available at the end of the summer. As a result of these strong IIHS ratings and Mazda’s commitment to prioritize standard safety equipment, Mazda has been named the Safest New Car Brand by Consumer Reports. To achieve this award Mazda needed good results in the IIHS side impact tests, strong moderate overlap crash protection, standard highway speed automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning and predictable, confidence inspiring handling in both every day and emergency conditions. We had the opportunity to speak with Jessica Jermakian from IIHS and Jennifer Morisson from Mazda about safety in our video.
