[Diving right back into the news,] A cruise ship was left, literally, wading in the water after a rare, deadly virus killed at least 2 passengers, with another dead from similar symptoms.
Now, Spain is taking them in with 3 more passengers coming down with symptoms, one in critical care in South Africa and almost 150 other passengers living what sounds like an absolute nightmare.
“What’s happening right now is very real for all of us here. We’re not just a story. We’re not just headlines. We’re people. People with families, with lives, people with families waiting for us at home.”
So, the MV Hondius set sail on April 1st, going from Argentina to Antarctica over the span of a few weeks. But by April 6th, one of the passengers started developing a fever with a headache and mild diarrhea. 5 days later, he was gone. His wife started experiencing symptoms as well and left the ship with her husband’s body on the 24th. Two days after that, she died too.
And a few days after that, another passenger died from similar symptoms.
By May 4th, the World Health Organization, or W.H.O, confirmed the first two died from a hantavirus infection. If you haven’t heard of hantavirus before, it’s a family of viruses mostly spread by coming into contact with rodent droppings. You could get it from cleaning up behind rats in the garage or drinking from a can that they had peed on, for example. It’s pretty uncommon. Here in the US, we’ve seen less than 900 cases since 2020. But for those who do get it, the symptoms are complete hell.
“People can develop lung failure, heart failure, kidney failure – very severe viral pneumonia is often how this manifests.”
Different strains have different effects on the body. But in a lot of cases, your chances of survival are basically a coin toss. That’s the anxiety the passengers have been dealing with for almost a month at this point. And as of right now, they still don’t even know how the outbreak started.
It could’ve been rats stowed away onboard, causing contamination. But reports say you also might not see symptoms until two months after you’re exposed to the virus. So a passenger could’ve been living with it weeks before they even boarded and spread it that way. I mean, they’re saying it’s rarely contagious from human to human, but it’s possible.
