We use the radar maps during a ride to avoid heavy rain. And of course there is the worldwide internet web thingy providing non-stop wisdom and practical advice about the best anodised valve caps. I spent a few hours on Skype the other day, talking to my fellow idiots from Traction Erag in Canada. All this technology is very cool. I no longer use carrier pigeons, but have this phone that can make calls, send text messages, and has a built in microwave oven. We discussed how the Internet has changed the world so radically for everyone... well at least for those of us rich enough to afford food, accommodation, computers and phones that can warm up your coffee. Over the years, there has been plenty of criticism of technology. Read books like Brave New World, Clockwork Orange, or 1984 for a bleak view of the future. Invented a cool bit of motorcycle bling? in the You needed to pay motorbike magazines for ads, get distributors interested in it, and hope the big guys would decide to back you. Now you just create your own website, take online orders and mail your bling direct. In the old days, you bought your glossy bike magazine to read about all the top riders. If you had a question, or wanted to give an opinion, they might publish your letter if you were lucky. Now you just go online to find out which stickers will make your bike go faster. Sure, all the top riders like Graham Jarvis or Jonny Walker are heroes, but the average joe can now be in the spotlight. But until that day, let's use the Internet for good, not evil. Start lots of forum threads about which are the best tyres or engine oil for your motorbike. Loudly proclaim your opinions but don't provide any evidence to support them. Ridicule those who disagree with you. Remember the Internet gives you a great opportunity to stop being polite and become an arrogant prick behind the keyboard. In the name of the terabyte, amen.
