Australia's new gambling advertising restrictions criticised as 'timid' years after landmark report

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced the highly anticipated reforms to combat harms from gambling — which costs Australians $32 billion in losses each year — during a National Press Club address. They include a restriction on television ads to three times an hour from 6pm to 8.30pm, with a complete ban during live sports, as well as a radio advertising ban during school pick-up and drop-off hours, an online ad ban for users under 18 years old and the addition of an opt-out feature on betting accounts. This comes after the 'You win some, you lose more' review — led by the late Labor MP Peta Murphy — made 31 recommendations when the report was handed down in 2023, including a total ban on gambling advertising within three years. Despite Albanese calling it "the most significant gambling reform that's ever been implemented", critics warn the Prime Minister's latest measures won't reduce harm.
