Abstract and biography
Have you ever wondered why some injuries heal and some lead to long lasting pain? It may have something to do with the immune system, the very same bodily system that helps us fight diseases and repair wounds. My name is Sam, a PhD student studying both the immune and nervous systems, and in this video I will show you how the two might be connected in the context of chronic pain. My research project involves using mice to understand how low levels of widely distributed signaling molecules related to inflammation circulate throughout the body after an injury to a nerve. I then try to understand what these molecules are, what they do, and importantly how to reduce many of them at the same time. This understanding would allow us to develop new treatment methods in the future that could effectively alleviate chronic pain.
