Buy an Electric Vehicle and Receive ₹1 Lakh Plus a 50% Waiver on Road Tax—You Just Have to Fulfill This One Condition!
The biggest news right now for the politics and people of Bihar is emerging from the Electric Vehicle (EV) sector. During a cabinet meeting chaired by CM Samrat Chaudhary, a major amendment was made to the Bihar Electric Vehicle Policy 2023—a move set to have a direct impact on every family dreaming of purchasing a vehicle.
The government has made it clear that the promotion of electric vehicles in Bihar will now be significantly accelerated. For women, in particular, this scheme is nothing short of a "Golden Offer." If a woman purchases an electric car, she will receive a subsidy of up to ₹1 lakh, credited directly to her bank account via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Additionally, financial assistance of up to ₹12,000 will be provided for the purchase of an electric bike or scooter.
Now, the question arises: why has the government suddenly become so generous toward EVs?
The primary reason lies in the continuously rising prices of petrol and ongoing global geopolitical tensions, which threaten to drive crude oil prices even higher. Currently, petrol prices in Patna have already reached approximately ₹105 per liter. Consequently, this places a direct financial strain on the common man.
This is precisely where the story of electric vehicles begins. People are now looking to move away from expensive petrol and diesel-powered commutes and are turning their gaze toward EVs; however, the biggest hurdle has always been the high upfront cost. With this in mind, the Bihar government has taken a significant step. Purchasers of EVs will now also receive a 50 percent waiver on the Motor Vehicle Tax, thereby further reducing the overall cost of ownership.
Consider this example:
If a woman purchases an electric car priced at approximately ₹10 lakhs—such as the Tata Punch EV, MG Comet EV, or Tata Tiago EV—she will receive a direct financial relief of ₹1 lakh. This means the effective cost of the car to her will be reduced to ₹9 lakhs.
However, there is one specific condition attached: the subsidy benefit will be granted only if the vehicle is registered in the woman's name. In other words, if a family intends to purchase an EV, registering it in the name of a female family member would be the most financially advantageous option.
The government has also ensured that the application process remains simple and hassle-free. A Aadhaar card and PAN card will be mandatory, whereas a driving license is not required. Applications can be submitted to the District Transport Office (DTO) either online or offline.
Now, let's discuss the most interesting part—how much actual savings can you expect from an EV?
If you drive a petrol car for 100 kilometers daily, your daily expenditure could amount to approximately ₹500 or more. In contrast, that same journey can be completed in an electric car for just ₹100–₹150. This means the cost is roughly 4 to 5 times lower!
Similarly, there are significant benefits to owning an electric bike or scooter. While a petrol bike can cost upwards of ₹100 per day to run, the expense for an EV can be limited to a mere ₹15–₹20. Viewed over the course of a year, potential savings of up to ₹30,000 are possible.
In short, it is clear: an EV isn't just a "smart deal" for the environment—it's a smart deal for your wallet, too.
