When we found Fifa, it was painfully clear that she had spent her life being treated as nothing more than a way to make money. Now that her body could no longer produce what someone wanted from her, she was simply thrown away. She was abandoned deep in the Redlands, left to suffer alone with no food, no comfort, and no one coming back for her. When we reached her, our hearts shattered. Fifa is covered in deep, infected bite wounds. Every rib, every bone, every painful curve of her frail body tells the story of prolonged starvation and neglect. She is so severely emaciated that it's hard to believe she's still standing. And then there's the massive tumor hanging from one of her mammary glands. At first glance, some might think it's milk from nursing puppies. It isn't. The puppies she recently gave birth to are gone. We can only imagine where they ended up. Sold for profit while the mother who gave them life was discarded once she was no longer useful. What remains is a painful, heavy mammary tumor that has likely been growing for far too long, forcing her to carry yet another burden on a body that has already endured unimaginable suffering. Today, Fifa is safe at VCA Knowles Snapper Creek, where our veterinary team is working to stabilize her and determine the full extent of what she has been through. We know what we can see from the outside, but we fear there is so much more happening internally. Between her infected wounds, severe malnutrition, diagnostic testing, medications, hospitalization, and the treatment she'll need for her mammary tumor, we know her medical care will be extensive. We wish stories like Fifa's were rare. Instead, they have become heartbreakingly familiar. This is the reality of backyard breeding. Mothers are bred over and over again until their bodies are broken. When they are no longer profitable, they are discarded as if their lives never mattered. Fifa didn't ask to be born into this life. She didn't ask to spend her days making someone else money. And she certainly didn't deserve to be left alone to die when her body finally gave out. Summer is already one of the hardest times of the year for rescues. Donations slow, adoptions slow, and yet the emergencies never stop. We were not prepared for another critical case like Fifa, but there was never a question of whether we would help. We simply couldn't look into her eyes and walk away.
