I might just move to… Miltenberg! A little Bavarian gem tucked along the banks of the Main River in southern Germany. In 2024 I stopped in Miltenberg during a road trip through Franconia. What I found was a fairytale-like town straight out of a storybook. Half-timbered houses line the cobbled streets, the air smells like fresh bread and wood smoke, and everyone I met was warm, relaxed, and happy to talk. It was early autumn, and the vineyards on the surrounding hills were just starting to turn gold. People were sipping wine on sunny terraces, and the local bakeries had their windows fogged up with fresh pastries and pretzels. I remember walking through the old town in the evening, feeling totally calm and safe. The kind of quiet you don’t get in cities. Just the sound of the river and distant church bells. It’s one of the few places where I didn’t feel like a tourist—I felt like I belonged. My favorite part? Miltenberg is home to Germany’s oldest inn, Gasthaus Zum Riesen. This place has been serving food since the 12th century. I ate there, and sitting in a candlelit wooden hall that’s been around for nearly a thousand years felt completely surreal. The food? Absolutely worth it. The town’s main landmark is Miltenberg Castle, perched right above the center. It’s small but perfectly preserved, and the views down onto the red-roofed town and river are unforgettable.
