Description
I’ve been attending Power2Drive for the past four years, and this was the first time I saw Tesla.
Last year, they were still working with big names like BP and EG Group. But now? Tesla Superchargers are available for any company willing to invest.
You can now buy Tesla Superchargers, put your own branding on them, and Tesla will handle the entire operation.
Here’s the concept in simple terms:
- You, as the customer, provide the site and pay for installation.
- Tesla supplies the chargers V3.5 (V4 Charge Posts + V3 Power Cabinet)
- Minimum Requirement: Four charge posts and one power cabinet
- If 6 charge posts are required, you would need to purchase 2 power cabinets.
Until here, these are one time costs.
From there, Tesla takes over and these are recurring costs.
- First line support
- On site maintenance and repairs
- Load and energy management
- Customer invoicing
I found this an interesting move because Tesla is moving beyond being just a CPO. They are looking to sell the chargers, meaning a direct competitor to EVCI manufacturers such as ABB, Alpitronic, Kempower, Tritium etc. and also they secure another stream of recurring revenues.
Also, Tesla avoids the time consuming task of acquiring new sites and negotiating contracts. As the customers handle that, this allows Tesla to focus on scaling its hardware footprint, while improving software, uptime, and service quality of their supercharger network.
With over 18,000 Superchargers already in Europe, this approach could accelerate Tesla supercharger's installation.
What do you think? Why would Tesla take this route, and how might it reshape the DC charging market?
