Description

We put our freshly rebuilt vintage milling and drilling attachment through its paces as we make 3 new custom bars for our Sir Meccanica WS2 Plus line borer! We are making 2 for line boring and 1 for cutting internal snap ring grooves. This was a big job and the perfect way to see what our setup is really capable of 💪 We get started on the lathe, where we prep the ends of each bar and modify the arbor for the snap ring cutter. Next up, we head over to our Zayer bed mill where we rotate the universal head and get the milling and drilling attachment mounted and trammed in. With everything set up, it’s time to put it to work. We start drilling, reaming, and tapping multiple holes along the 2 metre long bar to suit our 12mm tooling. The bar gets rotated in stages – first 180° to chamfer the opposite sides of the holes, then again 90° to drill and tap holes for the grub screws that lock the tools in place. One final 90° rotation and we mill a 5mm keyway the full length of the bar to match the drive key on the line borer. With our 2 metre line boring bar completed, we setup the bar for the snap ring cutter and cut the same keyway. The last step is to carefully heat the bar end to expand it just enough to fit the arbor. Once cooled we install the boring and facing head to complete the setup. That’s our 3 new shop made bars for the line borer completed ready to be put to work! This was a solid test for our old-school attachment, and it handled everything we threw at it. Safe to say it’s going to make future work on the Zayer a lot easier! ▶️ Watch the 3-part rebuild series of this vintage attachment: Part 1: https://youtu.be/cj-tOQrC63I Part 2: https://youtu.be/kpsMVqx7nm0 Part 3: https://youtu.be/yFEbpgB7seg Join our channel: We upload new videos every Friday at 5pm AEST!
