This is a closed bolt, integrally suppressed Sterling Mk5, a configuration that doesn’t officially exist in the books and may be one of a kind. Unlike the standard open bolt L34A1 used by British forces, this commercial variant runs a closed bolt system with a massive integral suppressor that ports the barrel and slows 9mm ammunition to subsonic speeds. The result is one of the quietest centerfire firearms we’ve ever tested. With real decibel readings taken at the shooter’s ear and a direct comparison against a modern suppressed subgun, this video breaks down how effective 1950s suppressor technology can be when taken to the extreme.
