I found this clump of brown seaweed washed up on the beach, and those little yellow bubbles are called pneumatocysts. They’re gas filled floats that help lift the seaweed up in the water so it can reach more sunlight. And yes, when they’re washed up like this, they can make those super satisfying little popping sounds when you press them. But they’re not eggs. They’re not seeds. They’re part of the seaweed’s structure. If it’s still attached and alive, I leave it alone. But when it washes up naturally, it becomes food, shelter, or nutrients for the beach ecosystem.
