Description
Marcel on the eve of his 13th week is once again found on the front verge several doors down ,fortunately he is easily identifiable for several reasons that include the fact that he almost always " responds " to me,he does not fly off when approached by me whilst saying his name & finally,if some " stranger " bird allows me near it,marcels missing rear nail/talon on his foot.
on this visit its not long before the two keys i have in my hand become his primary interest,i dont know if it the key/s itself or if he thinks that there is food attached.on this occasion he does not appear to have his " escort/chaperone " that has been shadowing his moves lately.from what i have witnessed in the past few weeks the adult birds seem to be actively keeping him away from any human contact with each of his visits becoming shorter.i only see him,at a maximum, twice per day with at least one of these visits being just before sundown where he comes for his last meal for the day.some days will find him, seemingly, starving and he scoffs down whatever is on offer like it was the last feed he would ever get.once he loses interest with the key ring he turns his attention to the the ugg boot slipper i mistakenly left home wearing.Marcel soon homes in on the big toe ares of the left foot which started out a few months back as a small tear in the sheepskin and thanks to his efforts the hole is now the same size,if not bigger,as the big toe it is meant to cover it.
Marcel was found on the ground in the last week of july after a very stormy night, after ringing a few places i was instructed to take him to specific vet surgery where i was advised that he was a raven, healthy, unlikely to have fallen to ground & he was a fledgling & " should be returned to where he was found his parents will look after him ".
unfortunately this was not the case and it was 4/5 days before the parents came near him,he also had a talon missing from a rear toe that became quite swollen & infected in the weeks that followed needing treatment,it was paw paw ointment that cleared it up after having no success with other conventional treatments..Although the only sure fire way to accurately identify the gender of a raven is by blood/dna test Marcel has been declared a male for a number of reasons with the primary one coming from my 15 yr old daughter who has declared that " that bird has to be a male.because its just so annoying " fortunately she avoids Marcel otherwise he might think his name is/was " stupid bird " admittedly the poor kid was swooped by a maggie as a five year old & it appears that it has left her quite scarred.
