Please share with your friends. The main church in Llucmajor is Sant Miquel de Llucmajor, the parish church that dominates the old town square. It is one of the largest and most imposing churches in rural Mallorca, and it reflects the prosperity Llucmajor experienced in the 18th and 19th centuries through agriculture and later the shoe industry. The current building was begun in 1784, replacing an older Gothic church from the 14th century. Construction lasted well into the 19th century because of financial and engineering difficulties. Several architects and master builders contributed to it over time, including Isidro González Velázquez, whose redesign gave much of the church its neoclassical character. Architecturally, the church is interesting because it blends: remnants of the original Gothic structure, late Baroque elements, and a strong Neoclassical redesign. One surviving feature from the medieval church is the old rose window embedded in the western wall. Inside, the scale is unusually grand for a town church, with a broad nave, large dome, and massive bell tower. The exterior is notably austere — the façade avoids heavy decoration and instead emphasizes monumentality and proportion. The church stands on Plaça Santa Catalina Tomàs, the historic heart of Llucmajor. Around it you can still see the old orthogonal street layout of the medieval town. Thanks for watching.
