The AMG V8 is finally back!!
Welcome back to RBR! Today we have not one, but two new #V8 #mercedesAMG SUVs: the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupé and the new Mercedes #AMG GLS 63. And this is a very important moment for AMG, because this is not a heavy plug-in hybrid, not an electric performance SUV, and definitely not a four-cylinder compromise.
These are a pure AMG V8 combustion cars, powered by the new evolution of the M177 4.0-litre biturbo V8 engine. Long live the AMG V8.
For many of us, big AMG SUVs are part of the brand’s madness. One of my earliest memories of AMG was seeing the ML55 in Autocar magazine — the idea that Mercedes had taken the SUV from Jurassic Park and put an AMG V8 into it felt completely bonkers at the time. But that is exactly the spirit AMG was built on. Like the Hammer, just in a different body style.
Now, with the latest GLE 63 S and GLS 63, that idea returns with a new-generation V8 engine that should go on to power a whole new era of AMG models, including the much anticipated CLE 63!
Under the bonnet is the new M177 EVO: a 4.0-litre V8 biturbo with a flat-plane crankshaft, reduced rotating masses, optimised injection, redesigned intake and exhaust ports, a revised intake camshaft, modified compressor wheel and updated turbocharger housing. It is supported by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system with a second-generation integrated starter generator, adding 23hp and 205Nm. The result is 612hp, 850Nm and a 0-62mph time of 4.2 seconds.
But the really important part is what this represents. In its first form, this new AMG V8 is already producing serious power, without needing to become a plug-in hybrid. And with AMG’s 60th anniversary approaching, this feels like the start of something much bigger.
In this video, we’ll cover:
- The new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupé
- The facelifted Mercedes-AMG GLS 63
- How the AMG 63 models differ from the 53 versions
- The new 63 AMG Design
- The new M177 EVO 4.0-litre biturbo V8
- Flat-plane crank, revised ports, turbos and camshaft changes
- Interior updates and luxury SUV practicality
- Exhaust Sound of the new V8!
I’ll also fill you on the sound of the new V8, why it sounds so good despite being a flat plane! And I’ll give you a look at the S63’s sound thats been spotted on the road. The GLE 63 S Coupé brings back the emotional AMG SUV formula, but the GLS 63 is arguably even more interesting. As things stand, it has no true rival. The BMW X7 M60i is the closest competitor, but it is almost 100hp down and not a full M car. The Audi SQ7 is smaller, and while a Q9 may come in future, an RS version remains to be seen. So for now, the GLS 63 remains the king of the hill.
The bigger question is what this new AMG V8 means for the future. If this is the first application of the M177 EVO, where else will it go? Could this be the basis for a future E63? What does it mean for cars like the S63? And is AMG finally giving us the V8 comeback enthusiasts have been waiting for?
Today, we take a full first look at the new AMG GLE 63 S Coupé and Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 to find out whether AMG’s V8 era is truly back.
