Volkswagen unveiled the all-new 2027 Atlas at the New York International Auto Show. At the front, double-stacked LED headlights, a masked upper grille, and a powerful hood project a confident face to the world. Double lightlines and an illuminated VW badge are standard on all but the base trim, making it instantly recognizable, day or night.
Stronger proportions and sleeker surfacing are seen best in the profile: A dynamic and sharp theme line runs along the upper body sides, augmented by strong fenders and sculpted side sills. Illuminated door handles are available, as are puddle lamps with a unique projection pattern. At the back, the spoiler is more pronounced, and the tailgate lies flush with the rear bumper, for a more modern shape. The cross-body taillight design mirrors the lighting signature in the front, and standard dynamic turn signals with three animations add a premium feel.
New wheels and exterior colors elevate the design upgrades: All trims except the base model receive new aluminum-alloy wheel designs in 20- and 21-inch diameters, with machined alloy and black finishes available; the entry Atlas rides on 18-inch rims. Three sophisticated new colors join the Atlas palette for 2027: Blackberry, Sacramento Green, and Sandstone.
Inside, a bold loop unifies the cockpit with one strong, architectural statement. Everything flows with purpose, from displays to vents and lighting. The shift lever moves to the steering column to free up space in a large center console, designed to handle family life. Revised door handles make the door panels look more premium.
High-quality soft-touch surfaces abound, with real-wood décor featured on all models and two leather options available: The interior features extensive use of contrasting colors and stitching. Three interior color palettes are available – an airy pebble grey, a moody black and dark grey, and an all-new deep wine. Leatherette remains standard on base models, while the top two trims feature Varenna and Nappa leathers.
Innovating ambient lighting sets a sophisticated tone: A 10-color setup is standard, and the top two trims receive 30 color options; a standard “Atmospheres” feature coordinates lighting and audio settings. On most trims, the ambient lighting flows through the dashboard loop and front footwells. The top two trims add an organic spiral pattern to the dash, which twists and morphs through innovative perforated backlit door panels in the first and second rows.
Smarter tech enhances the everyday experience: The large free-standing infotainment screen is 15 inches on all but the base trim, which gets a 12.9-inch display. All Atlas models feature Volkswagen’s 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro configurable gauge cluster. A new Driver Experience Dial in the center console controls audio volume, drive modes, and the Atmospheres feature. The console also has room for two cellphones to charge side by side with updated Qi2 wireless charging; seven USB-C ports are available throughout the vehicle as well.
The new 2027 Atlas is built on the upgraded MQB Evo architecture to maintain its spacious interior, particularly the generous third row. The vehicle is about an inch longer than the outgoing Atlas, and the width, wheelbase, and height remain the same.
It is fitted with the new EA888 evo5 turbocharged and direct-injection 2.0-liter four-cylinder TSI engine, producing 282 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. While power improves – 13hp more than the outgoing vehicle and the most ever seen on an Atlas model – the new engine is anticipated to provide better fuel economy than the previous model.
Towing capacity remains at 5,000 pounds for models with a factory-installed trailer hitch, and payload is unchanged from the outgoing model. As in the previous generation, an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard, and Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system is available across the lineup. A hybrid variant is planned to arrive with the mid-cycle refresh.
Further details, specifications, and pricing will be announced ahead of the launch this fall.
