Description

Content warning: This video includes discussion of suicide, mental health issues, self-harm and emotional distress. Growing up deaf, Ramas McRae understands the barriers his community faces and the consequences when support isn't accessible. Through his PhD research at Deakin University, Ramas is helping shine a light on the mental health challenges experienced by Deaf Australians. His work explores how communication barriers, social isolation and access to support can shape mental health outcomes across a lifetime. But for Ramas, research is only the beginning. From mentoring young Deaf people and working directly with communities, to advocating for greater visibility of sign language and improved mental health services, his work is driven by a vision for meaningful change led by and for the Deaf community. This video is predominantly presented in Auslan with captions.
