Rob Jetten Sworn In as First Openly Gay Dutch Prime Minister

Rob Jetten has officially become the Netherlands’ youngest prime minister and its first openly gay leader, after forming a minority government following a closely fought election. His Democrats 66 (D66) party narrowly outpaced the anti-immigration Freedom Party led by Geert Wilders in last year’s vote. Jetten, 38, has since built a centre-right coalition with the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and the Christian Democratic Alliance (CDA). As a minority government, Jetten’s administration must negotiate support for each major policy change across both houses of parliament. The coalition’s priorities include boosting defence spending by around €19 billion (£16.6 billion) and tightening asylum rules so refugees apply before reaching Europe.
