Panic erupted inside the Khajuraho-Udaipur Intercity Express after rumours of a fire spread among passengers. Fearing for their lives, several passengers jumped off the train before verifying the situation. Many of them landed on the adjacent railway track. At the same moment, the speeding Patalkot Express arrived from the opposite direction. The tragic incident claimed four lives, including three women and a young child.
