The Firebird Suite closes out Fantasia 2000, directed by the Brizzi brothers, and while it looks like pure hand-drawn 2D, it's actually a quiet hybrid. The elk's antlers were CGI-rendered on top of hand-drawn animation, and the Spring Sprite's particles were programmed in 3D to trigger individual plants growing across the landscape. The magic is that you'd never know. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2026), produced by Illumination and Nintendo, makes no secret of its full 3D approach: colorful, kinetic, built for cosmic scale. The CGI is the point. Two films using computer graphics in completely opposite ways: one hiding it to protect an illusion, the other putting it front and center. Both work.
