Description
Former University of Hawaiʻi captain and defensive back Peter Manuma earned a free-agent contract with the New England Patriots after participating in the team’s rookie minicamp tryout last week.
The University of Hawaiʻi standout and James Campbell High School graduate totaled 281 tackles and five interceptions during a four-year career with the Rainbow Warriors. Manuma’s performance at rookie camp helped secure an opportunity with the Patriots as he begins his pursuit of an NFL roster spot.
Hawaiʻi associate head coach Chris Brown said Manuma simply needed a chance to prove himself at the next level.
“Yeah, that’s all he needs,” Brown said. “Peter’s a guy that just needed that opportunity. He’s 100 miles an hour in everything that he does, and the NFL is going to find out real fast that he belongs there. The way he plays, his tenacity, his savvy for the game, his ability to get to the ball, his speed — he has everything the NFL is looking for.
“The other thing is that he’s a great teammate and a guy who would represent a team very, very well. Some team is going to be very blessed to get him.”
Brown also praised Manuma’s leadership during his time at Hawaiʻi.
“I always said, even for us as players, the greatest accolade was the ability to be a team captain,” Brown said. “When he was voted and chosen as team captain, it’s because he earned it. People look up to him, people admire him. He leads by example, he leads through speech, and he does everything the right way. It’s an honor and a privilege to be a captain, and that’s going to be the standard.”
