Living in Vietnam for 20 Years | A Photographer Reflects on Vietnam’s 80th National Day

As Vietnam celebrates its 80th National Day, I reflect on nearly 20 years of calling this beautiful country my home . Vietnam has been my teacher, my muse, and the foundation of my life and career in photography. From my early days as a young photojournalist documenting the lasting shadows of Agent Orange and telling the story of a young girl named Nhu, to photographing the breathtaking mountains of Hà Giang, the rolling tea fields of Mộc Châu, and the vibrant streets of Hanoi, Vietnam has shaped me as both a photographer and a person. This country gave me love in the form of my wife and partner, and it has given me countless opportunities to share Vietnam’s resilience, beauty, and spirit with the outside world. I’ve covered devastating floods where people laughed through hardship, documented Vietnam’s rapid growth, and witnessed the unity that carried the nation through the COVID pandemic. This video is my love letter to Vietnam — a reflection of gratitude, resilience, and beauty. Through my images, I hope to show not only what Vietnam looks like, but what it feels like.
