Baghsarian was taken from his home in North Ryde before dawn on February 13, in what police believe was a case of mistaken identity. His body was later found near a golf course in Pitt Town, about 10 days after he was allegedly killed. Detectives from the Robbery and Serious Crime Squad, under Strike Force Chobat, arrested 23-year-old Deklin James Donnelly, who police allege was a key organiser in the plot. Investigators claim the group originally intended to abduct a relative of Dimitri Stepanyan, but targeted the wrong home. A ransom demand of up to $50 million was reportedly made before the mistake was realised. Police allege Donnelly recruited others, including Daniel Stevens and Gerard Andrews, to carry out the kidnapping. Authorities believe Baghsarian was killed soon after, at a property in Dural, before his body was dumped in Pitt Town.
