Last year, Mercedes took its first win in Canada since Hamilton in 2019, and its first for 2026 with George Russell on top, and then-F1 rookie Kimi Antonelli his maiden podium in third. Canada was a surprise for Mercedes, with the W16 unusually strong in warmer temperatures given the track conditions. But, the major highlight of the race was the clashing of the McLarens - as the battle for the title escalated. Lando Norris got past his papaya teammate Oscar Piastri for fourth at the hairpin on lap 66, but was outdragged down the back straight. Norris then attempted a desperate re-pass down an ever-narrowing inside line, forcing contact, front wing damage, his retirement, and the safety car to be deployed, which closed out the thrilling race.
