Today we’re exploring the Missouri side of the Kansas border, traveling south just a few miles east of Kansas along a string of tiny railroad towns and near-ghost communities that once thrived on the rails—from Jaudon and Cleveland to West Line, Drexel, Amsterdam, Amoret, and beyond—following the old Kansas City Southern line through places like Merwin, Worland, Amos, Stotesbury (population 12!), and ending in Richards; along the way we uncover Civil War and outlaw lore tied to figures like Jesse James, test out a quirky gravity hill, cruise Stateline Road with Missouri on one side and Kansas on the other, and see firsthand how populations have shifted over time in the shadow of Kansas City, Missouri—it’s a full day of small-town history, abandoned buildings, railroad remnants, and quiet back roads in western Missouri.
