Nigel Farage resigns as an MP to fight for a seat he already had

► Sir Keir Starmer has slammed Nigel Farage’s announcement that he is quitting as an MP – but will stand in a by-election for a seat he is vacating – as a “desperate stunt” by someone “up to his neck in sleaze”. “It’s obvious why he is doing it. He is up to his neck in sleaze. Politics should be about improving the lives of millions of people, not about personal gain, not about hiding dodgy donations, and I think the public will see this for exactly what it is,” Sir Keir said. In a statement amid growing controversy surrounding his finances and donations, Mr Farage said: "I've decided that the people of Clacton should be the judges of my actions. "And that is why I will be putting my name forward to stand in this by-election. I will fight to win," he said in a statement livestreamed by Reform.
