Vogue called her one of the most beautiful women in the world. But Maharani Gayatri Devi’s story was about far more than beauty. Born in 1919 into the royal family of Cooch Behar, she grew up in privilege but also with unusual freedom. She learned horse riding, shooting, tennis, and even drove cars at a time when many women were still expected to live behind purdah. When she married Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II and became the Maharani of Jaipur, she used her position to push for change. In 1943, she founded the Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls’ School, encouraging young girls to pursue education when it was still uncommon for many families to send daughters to school. After India became independent and royal privileges began to fade, Gayatri Devi reinvented herself. She entered politics and, in 1962, won the Jaipur Lok Sabha seat with a record-breaking margin that earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records. Her life wasn’t without struggles. During the Emergency, she was imprisoned in Tihar Jail. Yet she remained dignified and outspoken throughout her life. Elegant, fearless, and fiercely independent, Maharani Gayatri Devi proved that women could lead, challenge traditions, and create their own legacy.
