Description
A sea of devotion at Nanjangud
One of Karnataka’s biggest temple fairs - the grand Nanjangud Srikanteshwara Temple Jatre - Captured from above!
The Nanjangud Srikanteshwara Temple is one of the oldest and largest Shiva temples in Karnataka, with a history spanning over a thousand years. Built and expanded by dynasties like the Gangas, Cholas, Hoysalas, and Wodeyars, the temple stands majestically on the banks of the Kapila (Kabini) River.
Revered as “Dakshina Kashi” (Kashi of the South), it holds immense spiritual significance. The presiding deity, Nanjundeshwara which means “the one who drank poison”, is associated with the Samudra Manthan legend.
The temple is believed to have powerful purifying qualities, where a holy dip in the Kapila River followed by darshan is said to cleanse sins (Papa Vinashini).
According to legend, Sage Parashurama performed penance here to atone for his deeds. Even Tipu Sultan is said to have believed in the deity’s healing power, calling him “Hakim Nanjunda” after his elephant was cured.
The highlight is the Pancha Maha Rathotsava (5 chariot festival). During the grand Jatre, five massive wooden chariots carrying Nanjundeshwara (Shiva), Parvati, Ganesha, Subramanya, and Chandikeshwara are pulled through the streets by thousands of devotees, creating a breathtaking spectacle of faith and devotion.
