Description
All precautions were used throughout this practice including -
Teasing the mare prior to breeding to confirm in season.
Stallion has been trained to serve mares and collect with a phantom mare.
The mare is not hard tied, so there's a quick release if required.
The mare is lip twitched for a short time as this is her first time with live cover but previously been served via AI.
The mare has breeding boots on back hooves in case she kicks out at the stallion for his protection.
The stallion has a leather halter with a chain under his chin - other options are over the nose or over the gums, however I have decided to use the least harsh method to still have control but allow the stallion to relax while breeding.
The handler is wearing safe boots, helmet and riding vest.
The only other things I would have liked is a secure tail wrap on the mare.
Please note this stallion is slightly uneasy on his hind legs due to previous surgery from stringhalt and it was his first mare of the season, they can take a moment to get used of the height of the mare as well.
This was a successful breeding with mare testing positive in foal at 15 and 45 days. She foaled a bay filly at 357 days.
