Why did The Night Watch disappear? 😮

In 1939, with the threat of World War II looming over Europe, the Rijksmuseum rushed to protect Rembrandt’s masterpiece. A specially built art bunker in the dunes was prepared. As the war escalated, so did the need for more secure hiding places. The painting was moved multiple times, eventually finding refuge in a bombproof marlstone cave near Maastricht.
