Description

In 1939, with the threat of World War II looming over Europe, the Rijksmuseum rushed to protect Rembrandt’s masterpiece. A specially built art bunker in the dunes was prepared. As the war escalated, so did the need for more secure hiding places. The painting was moved multiple times, eventually finding refuge in a bombproof marlstone cave near Maastricht. To prevent the canvas from stretching, it had to be regularly rotated during its stay underground. ↪️ In 1945, after the war ended, The Night Watch made its way back to Amsterdam by ship. 🚢 #rijksmuseum #nightwatch #rembrandtvanrijn
