The German city of Bremen is being bombed. The B-17 bomber piloted by Lieutenant Charles Brown is heavily damaged by German air defences. The aircraft is crippled, the crew tired and wounded. Just then, veteran German pilot Franz Stigler seizes the opportunity to shoot down Brown's plane. Stigler sees Brown's aeroplane in his sights. It's only a matter of time before he pulls the trigger. But he hesitates for a moment. He sees the damage to Brown's aeroplane and the helpless crew. And at that moment, a sense of compassion for the atrocities of war overcomes him. Stigler gives up shooting Brown and instead makes a decision to protect the crippled aircraft. He flies alongside Brown's aeroplane and escorts it safely through German airspace to the open sea. With a final salute, he says goodbye to Brown. Later, the two pilots met years later and became friends.
