Description
Those long white "strings" aren't legs or anything hanging out of the cuttlefish. They're actually two hidden hunting tentacles.
Unlike an octopus, a cuttlefish has eight short arms and two long tentacles that stay tucked away until it's time to hunt.
When it spots a fish or shrimp, those tentacles shoot out in the blink of an eye. The sticky tips grab the prey and instantly pull it back to the arms, where the cuttlefish finishes the job with its sharp beak.
The strike is incredibly fast - around 15 milliseconds - making cuttlefish some of the fastest hunters in the ocean when it comes to catching prey.
In this video, the tentacles are extending slowly because the cuttlefish isn't actually hunting. During a real attack, they're so fast they're almost impossible to see with the naked eye.
What looks creepy is actually one of the most advanced hunting tools in the ocean.
