How do I use large printed backdrops in newborn photography? I love artistic, hand-painted backdrops. They’re one of a kind, and incredibly beautiful. But sometimes, the patterns can be very dominating. So how do you use these large, busy backdrops with tiny newborn babies — without losing focus on the baby? My technique is simple. First, stack your props so the baby is lifted, and the face becomes the center of the image. Second, keep the backdrop further away from the baby — at least half a meter distance. Third, use a long lens with a wide open aperture. This gives you that dreamy background, but not too blurred that you only see color patches. Otherwise, what’s the point of using these beautiful, expensive backdrops? Finally, pose the baby in a more upright position, so you can shoot in a vertical composition — because the backdrop itself is vertical. Do you like the result? My name is Sissi.
