2 Insights incl. one oops moment from my visit to the EnBW's Site in Karlsruhe, Germany today. 👇
First, I owe a BMW driver an apology! 😅
I always tell people you need authentication to stop a fast charging session.
But today, I learned that perhaps Plug & Charge*, the rules might be different. *(I would really appreciate if one can correct me here, if I am wrong).
Insight 1: The Stop Button Mystery.
While standing next to XCharge 400 kW charger, someone initiated a charging session and asked if this can be stopped by pressing the button - that was the first ever public charging session by this person.
Being ultra confident I said, absolutely not and pressed "Stop" on the screen to show it won't work. Instead... it just stopped. It was indeed an embarrassing situation 😅
But then the person initiated another charging session but this time was required to present RFID card and the person confirmed that in the previous session, it started automatically. This is the reason I am assuming this, as I have tried stopping sessions and it always asks RFID at these XCharge stations.
👉 My question to the experts: Is this standard behavior? Have you observed it? Or is this a specific setting on this hardware?
Insight 2: The Numbers are STAGGERING
On a brighter note, these chargers are absolutely working overtime. I checked the meter readings:
- ~500 - 600 kWh per charge point, per day
- That’s over 1,000 kWh per charger daily.
- Easily 15 - 16 sessions/charge point or 30 - 32 sessions/charger.
- est. 30% utilization rate.
These are unbelievable utilization numbers for a winter day. In summer it will be like 20% less perhaps but nonetheless, It was amazing to witness such high utilization and number of cars charging on this site.
