Kyoto’s Hidden Autumn Garden｜Momiji Garden at Kitano Tenmangu

The Momiji Garden (Momiji-en) at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is a beautifully landscaped maple garden along the Kamiyagawa River, featuring around 350 maple trees. Importantly, the garden is not open all year round. It is only opened to the public for limited periods, during the autumn maple season and the early summer fresh green maple season. In autumn, the garden comes alive with vivid shades of red, orange, and gold, reflected in the river below. It is regarded as one of Kyoto’s finest autumn foliage spots, and during peak season, the garden is also illuminated at night, creating a magical and atmospheric scene. In early summer, the garden opens again for the green maple (aomomiji) season, when fresh, vibrant leaves form a cool and refreshing landscape. This quieter season offers a more tranquil way to appreciate Kyoto’s natural beauty.
