Description

Lost in a New Zealand jungle hike The story and event surrounding this video is this: While visiting the North Island of New Zealand in a fairly remote area I went for an unplanned early morning walk before anyone else was awake. My destination was the top of a razorback ridge visible from the guest cabin where we were staying at. My plan was to follow the trail leading from the cabin to the peak and come straight back. My mistakes were: not taking any water with me, and not notifying or communicating with anyone else what my plans and destination were before I left. Being overcast with no visible sign of the sun and on the opposite side of the equator, I still have no idea which direction the trail was. Because it is so drastically different than my Northern Alberta Canada home, I would much rather explore than sleep in. In the end, what happened is that I made it to the top and inadvertently took a wrong ridge back down and ended up on a different set of hills. I recorded much more footage climbing up the slope (previously posted as New Zealand jungle bush trial ASMR). After arriving at what I believe was the peak, I explored and I made several clips in a vertical format to share as "shorts" which are part of this video. My first clue that I had lost the trail was when I tried to return to the "snake tree" and could not find it even though it was likely less than 100 meters from me. Suspecting I had lost the trail, I backtracked to see if I could identify a different ridge beginning, but with with no luck. Once I discovered I was indeed lost with no ability to navigate or way to identify the proper trail, I stopped recording to preserve my phone battery. I had minimal cell service and nobody answered their phones. So I messaged the kids as to where, when, and what I was doing, and started back down the hill hoping I was still on the right ridge. I KNEW only 1 fact, which was that I knew everything to my right while on the way down would be inhabited, and everything to my left was completely uninhabited and unknown to me. Being almost positive I was not on the proper trail, and no means to identify where it was, I favored staying to my right. This would either bring me down to the cabin, or down towards where I knew there was open farmland and houses. The clip showing the cabin was the first time I had any proof I was indeed correct and that I was lost, and where I was in relation to the cabin. So I made my way downwards towards a stream and followed it out towards inhabited land. I expected that it would likely take the entire day to find my way down and out, but managed to do so by mid morning. Thanks for watching. And for those who ACTUALLY read the description - congratulations!! You are not only your mother's favorite child - but possibly my favorite viewer!
