The 2009 Monterey Sports Car Championships at then Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca (Now WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca) closed the American Le Mans Series season with one of the era’s most memorable races. Simon Pagenaud and Gil de Ferran won overall for de Ferran Motorsports in the Acura ARX-02 after 168 laps, finishing less than a second ahead of the Lowe’s Fernandez Racing ARX-01. In GT2, championship leaders Jörg Bergmeister and Patrick Long entered the finale needing a ninth or better result to secure the championship in the No. 45 Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche 997 GT3 RSR, but left with both the race win and the title. After multiple cautions and late-race strategy swings, Bergmeister engaged in an intense battle with Jan Magnussen in the factory Corvette C6.R, holding on through the final laps to secure victory.
