It is December 5, 1757. Frederick the Great, king of the rising Prussian state, rides through the clear, icy winter air. Upon reaching a small hill near the village of Leuthen, he looks out on an overwhelming sight. As far as the eye can see, the enemy line stretches across the horizon. Sixty-six thousand Austrian soldiers—nearly twice the number he commands—stand ready to face his exhausted troops. At Leuthen, the Prussians set an enduring example of how linear tactics were best executed. The battle is widely regarded as one of the greatest—perhaps the greatest—military achievements in Europe during the Ancien Régime. Even Napoleon praised it as “a masterpiece of movements, maneuvers, and resolution.” This is how modern historiography recounts the story of the Battle of Leuthen.
