Description

The history of Senso-ji Temple In the Asuka period, early in the morning of March 18th, 628 (the 36th year of Emperor Suiko's reign), the brothers Hinokuma no Hamanari and Takenari, while fishing in Edoura (Sumida River), unexpectedly encountered a sacred image of Kannon. The local official, Haji no Nakatomo (there are various theories about his name), worshipped it and, recognizing it as the Holy Kannon Bodhisattva, became deeply devoted to it. He subsequently became a monk, converted his home into a temple, and dedicated his life to worship and offerings. In 645 (the first year of the Taika era), the monk Shokai came to this area, built a Kannon Hall, and, guided by a dream revelation, designated the principal image as a hidden Buddha. Since then, this rule of transmission has been strictly observed to this day.
